The shear punch test

The shear punch test is a simple and rapid method for determining the undrained shear strength of clays. The testing equipment and methodology have been developed at SGI's geotechnical laboratory.

During the test, a punch is pressed into an enclosed soil sample, creating a well-defined shear failure. Deformation and force are measured throughout the test, allowing for the calculation and evaluation of the undrained shear strength.

Due to its simplicity and strong correlation with undrained direct shear test, the shear punch test is a cost-effective complementary method, especially useful when frequent determinations of undrained shear strength are needed within a soil profile.
