Theoretical study of the failure conditions in saturated soils

Sammanfattning The strength of soils is treated from different aspects. The imperfections of the theories and the limitations of experiences are discussed, mainly in connection with plastic clays. Attention is drawn to some fundamental properties which influence the resistance capacity to shearing. Moreover, a failure theory is introduced in which energy considerations are utilized. The differences between the stability failure on one hand and the yield failure on the other are discussed. Finally, some applications on specific cases of stability are demonstrated.
